Marking a significant milestone, China and Russia recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of their Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation. Both nations underscored their dedication to enhancing bilateral relations and strengthening long-term strategic collaboration. The treaty, which was initially signed on July 16, 2001, and later renewed, serves as the legal basis for their broad strategic partnership. Chinese authorities emphasized that the countries would continue to deepen cooperation across various sectors, aiming to foster stability and confidence in global development.
The commemoration of this anniversary coincides with preparations for another significant event: the 30th anniversary of their strategic partnership, which will be observed in 2026. A key aspect of their partnership is robust trade relations, with China holding the position of Russia’s largest trading partner for 16 years running. In 2025, trade between the two nations amounted to approximately $228 billion, and commerce in the first half of 2026 saw a marked increase compared to the same timeframe the previous year.
Analysts and officials highlight that the treaty has been instrumental in fortifying political trust between China and Russia. It has also expanded economic collaboration and enhanced the overall resilience of their bilateral relations. The partnership is described as being grounded in principles of non-alignment, non-confrontation, and mutual benefit, contributing to a more balanced international order.
Through the years, the treaty has provided a framework that allows both countries to pursue mutually beneficial goals while navigating the complex landscape of international relations. As they look forward to decades of continued partnership, China and Russia reaffirm their commitment to this enduring alliance, which remains a cornerstone of their foreign policies.
