Nine automakers, including Tesla, are set to recall approximately 4.3 million vehicles in China due to concerns over the usability of hidden or emergency door-release handles during accidents and electrical malfunctions. Tesla is the most affected, with about 2.98 million vehicles spanning various models such as the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X, both imported and manufactured in China. The recall action is slated to commence on September 25.
The issue at hand is that emergency mechanical door-release handles may be hard to identify following a severe collision, posing a risk to occupants who might struggle to exit the vehicle, as well as to rescuers attempting to gain access. Solutions for the affected vehicles could involve the application of warning labels, enhanced markings, or over-the-air software updates to address these safety concerns.
Besides Tesla, other significant recalls include around 390,000 vehicles from Xiaomi, 371,000 from Leapmotor, and 264,000 from Xpeng. These recalls underscore the broader industry challenge of ensuring that vehicle safety mechanisms are intuitive and accessible, especially in emergency situations.
In response to these safety concerns, China has been tightening its vehicle safety regulations. A significant policy shift is on the horizon, with plans to prohibit concealed door handles by 2027. This move reflects the country’s ongoing efforts to enhance passenger safety and underscores the critical importance of accessible emergency exits during vehicle emergencies.
