Amid rising tensions over energy trade, China has expressed strong disapproval of a proposed U.S. sanctions bill that targets prominent purchasers of Russian oil and natural gas. The Chinese government has vowed to take all necessary steps to safeguard the legitimate interests and rights of its businesses in response to these potential measures.
Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, emphasized the country’s firm opposition to unilateral sanctions that lack a foundation in international law or approval from the United Nations Security Council. He highlighted China’s stance against what it perceives as unlawful and unilateral impositions by the United States.
The proposed legislation in the United States aims to sanction the largest global consumers of Russian crude oil and natural gas, specifically mentioning China among its targets. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to exert pressure on Russia by potentially disrupting its energy trade relationships.
Lin cautioned against the application of double standards and coercive tactics, arguing that such approaches would ultimately prove counterproductive. By reaffirming China’s opposition to these measures, Lin underscored the importance of adhering to international legal frameworks and mutual respect among nations.
