The Chinese government has issued a cautionary message to the United States, urging careful handling of matters concerning Taiwan. This comes in response to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of his intention to converse with Taiwan’s leader, Lai Ching-te. Such interactions are particularly delicate for Beijing, as it regards Taiwan as part of its sovereign territory and strongly opposes any formal international engagements with the island’s officials.
For China, Taiwan is seen as a dissident province that should eventually reunite with the mainland, with the use of force as an option if necessary. Beijing adamantly objects to any foreign powers treating Taiwan as if it were an independent state and frequently criticizes high-level diplomatic interactions between other nations and Taiwanese officials. Chinese authorities have expressed that actions like Trump’s proposed call send “wrong signals” to those advocating for Taiwan’s independence and constitute interference in China’s domestic affairs.
Recent years have seen a rise in tensions surrounding Taiwan. Notably, in 2022, China conducted extensive military drills around the island following a visit by a prominent U.S. official. Additionally, Beijing has consistently reacted with disapproval toward American arms sales and political backing for Taiwan. Despite these tensions, Taiwan identifies itself as a self-ruling democracy, formally known as the Republic of China. The Taiwanese government refutes Beijing’s claims of sovereignty, asserting the right of its citizens to elect their leaders and engage in international diplomacy.
The United States maintains an official stance through the “One China” policy, which involves recognizing Beijing diplomatically while sustaining informal ties with Taiwan. As per the Taiwan Relations Act, Washington provides Taiwan with defensive military equipment. In a significant past episode, Trump had a direct conversation with then-Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen in 2016, an uncommon occurrence that drew criticism from China. Any forthcoming dialogue between Trump and Lai could potentially exacerbate the already strained U.S.-China relations and might provoke additional Chinese military maneuvers near Taiwan.
