President Donald Trump drew a clear diplomatic line in the sand on Thursday, declaring through Truth Social that Iran must make a definitive decision about the ceasefire before time runs out. Trump accused Iranian negotiators of behaving dishonestly, claiming they were privately begging for a deal even as their government maintained a public stance of cautious deliberation. The message combined frustration, urgency, and an implicit threat in a manner that left little room for ambiguity.

The ceasefire proposal the US has laid out contains 15 key provisions that offer Iran meaningful incentives. These include relief from economic sanctions, a rollback of its nuclear programme, restrictions on its missile capabilities, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The strait handles approximately a fifth of global oil supplies and is of paramount importance to the world economy. Iran’s formal rejection of the proposal has stalled the peace process significantly.

Iran has publicized its own demands through state television, including protection of its officials from targeted strikes, formal assurances of no future war, reparations for damage caused during the conflict, and internationally recognized sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. These demands reflect a very different vision of peace from Washington’s and suggest that Iran’s bar for a deal is considerably higher than what the US has offered. Closing this gap will require serious and sustained negotiations.

The war has exacted an enormous human toll. More than 1,500 people have been killed in Iran and nearly 1,100 in Lebanon, with further casualties in Israel and beyond. Thirteen US soldiers have died in the conflict, and millions of people across Iran and Lebanon have been displaced by the ongoing violence.

Thursday’s message from Trump was unmistakably final in tone: Iran has until the sand runs out to make its choice. Military operations continue while diplomacy stalls, and the risk of irreversible escalation grows daily. The choice Iran makes in the days ahead will determine whether this costly and devastating conflict can finally be brought to an end.
